Buergbrennen: Yes, Please

Guys. You should totally come try this next year. Torches, impressive medieval costumes, food (steak sandwiches cooked over an open fire on a suspended spinning grill!), humongous bon fire, and epic smash-and-bash sword/axe fights. Two thumbs up, fine family entertainment!

FIRE! This is meant to burn out Winter. Luxembourgers don't mess around with ground squirrels; they light an enormous wooden structure (stuffed with what looked like Christmas trees) on fire and give Winter its marching orders. On the way back to the car, our friends' three-year-old wanted to know why, if we had just burned out winter, was it still so cold? I had to agree when we got home and Winter struck back by dumping potato-chip-sized snowflakes for the rest of the evening. Well played, Winter.

Today, however, the sky is blue! So perhaps we made some kind of headway afterall.
